Welcome to Polarstern
Between 27 October and 27 November we invite you to a virtual trip with the German research vessel Polarstern from Germany (Bremerhaven) to South Africa (Cape Town). Are you a student, general or maritime forecaster or a climatologist? Then you are welcome to train your skills in climatology and in the interpretation of satellite images and products including wind information form Meteosat, Metop and Jason.
The satellite images will be considered in the context of other data, NWP and observations from Polarstern and other ships.
You will find current images under Todays Images and the Archive from this cruise. For the Polarstern Observations please click to the current position of Polarstern and a popup window will open.

Training Activities
During the trip we will offer you (most of them every 3 hours) satellite images, model fields, observations and images from cloud and oceans. Try to make your own forecast and compare it with the original forecast from the meteorologist on board of Polarstern.
12 students from the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences of Germany (Langen) will write for you every week a summary of the weather situation. They show you the use of the different images and measurements.
From calendar week 46 you will find every week a routine report with weather and climate information and a special report with different topics. The first Special Report informs you about the study trip to the research vessel Polarstern and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven.
You will find these reports at first in German (later also in English)
here. If you will click “More [+]”, the EUMeTrain training page with the last date will open.

About Polarstern
The Polarstern is almost 310 days a year at sea, most of these in the Arctic and Antarctic during the respective summer. But this transfer voyage ANT-XXIX/1 to Cape Town marks the start of an exceptionally long research campaign on the southern hemisphere in the year of Polarsterns thirty’s anniversary. The vessel will winter in Antarctica and return to its homeport Bremerhaven only after 1.5 years. This vessel operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).

Research Activities
At about 20 stations along the cruise track, data and samples will be collected for an interdisciplinary research and education programme. 28 international doctoral and master students will have the unique opportunity to learn and apply state-of-the-art methods in marine research directly at sea for hands-on practical training.
In the framework of the OCEANET programme, atmospheric measurements will be conducted en route to provide a data basis and ground-truth information for climate models.
Work onboard will be completed by the calibration of several echo sounders as well as the installation and test of new radio sonde equipment for weather balloons. (AWI)
Under “More [+]” you will find all information from AWI about the research activities and also the weekly reports from Polarstern.
