Weather Events

Parameter Description
Precipitation
  • Rainfall rates above 3 mm/h can be observed in small areas over central-eastern Argentina during the pre-cyclogenesis phase, associated with an upper level cut-off low and a cold front over this region.
  • During the cyclogenesis stage, we may see larger areas of heavy rainfall over the continent (central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, western Santa Catarina State and southern Paraguay), in connection with the cold front, while the low-pressure system over the ocean (as seen in the Quickscat image and in the analysis) shows increasing rainfall around the center of the low-pressure system.
  • During the mature phase, the heavy rainfall which occurs in connection with the cold front over the continent moves northeastwards and the rainfall pattern connected with the low pressure over the ocean extends towards the continent.
Significant Weather and Marine Hazards (waves)
  • The first thunderstorms can be observed over central-eastern Argentina during the pre-cyclogenesis stage and move together with the cold front towards Uruguay and Southeastern Brazil (including Paraguay and northeastern Argentina) during the cyclogenesis stage. During the mature stage, only a few thunderstorms can still be seen over the continent, as the most active area of the cyclone has moved towards the ocean.
  • During the mature phase, waves above 8 m are observed close to the occlusion.
  • Low thermal contrast between air masses on both sides of the cold front.
Wind (incl. gust)
  • The most intense winds can be observed over the ocean during cyclogenesis and mature phase of the lifecycle, with an estimated speed over 20 m/s around the low-pressure system.
