EUMeTrain: Case Study on Prefrontal Convergence

Vertical Cross Sections

Vertical cross sections are important tools as they allow a view into the vertical extension of synoptic and mesoscale systems. In this chapter several aspects of interest of the prefrontal convergence are discussed:

Vertical Cross Sections of the prefrontal convection

In the next chapter in several timesteps the vertical cross sections are discussed.

Summary of the investigations in this chapter

The timeseries of the VCS shows that already at an early stage the prefrontal region is characterised by an unstable stratification. This induces convergence near the surface and the rising motions are also well reflected in this analyses. With the region governed by warm air advection, adding some slight contribution to the positive omega. The cold front is under cold air advection providing a strong contrast.
