EUMeTrain: Case Study on severe convection over Ukrain

Synoptic Situation: Radio Soundings

In the previous set of images the convection was studied and described from just one isentropic level. In this chapter the radio sounding for the 9th and 10th July 2004 are given and described. The vertical appearance of the atmosphere shows when and how unstable the atmosphere was for different timesteps in Ukrain.

Sounding Lvov: 9th July 2004: 00UTC

Station latitude: 49.82
Station longitude: 23.95

The height of ground inversion, which prevents the vertical exchange and convection, is seen close to the surface. It is a night time inversion, which was caused by a cooling of a surface. The atmospheric stratification is unstable from the level of 1521 m to 12150 m. The stability indices all indicate the possibility for thunderstorms. with a value of CAPE equal to 749.3 and the Lifted Index and K-index of -1.52 and 32.7, resp.
