Convection

"First of all we have a look into the overall weather situation. A very convinient tool for this is the SatRep (Satellite Report) which shows an analysis of the cloud features in terms of conceptual models and relates them to relevant numerical parameters.
There is a frontal system from Spain to the West Alps which moves from 06.00 to 12.00 UTC a bit to the north but is rather stationary. The area NE-France, Switzerland, West Austria and S-Germany is under the influence of the warmest air and shows extremely unstable values of the Showalter index (less than - 3). In addition to this a PVA maximum moves from morning to noon into this area. Consequently this is a large area predestined for the development of heavy thunderstorms. "

A pronounced trough close to the surface and a strong western stream at 500 hPa can be found at both points of time.
