30th July 2005: 06UTC
In this first IR10.8 image a frontal system can be seen over central Europe. The occluded part of the system is quite enhanced and is covering parts of Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands. The part of cold front is found over Switzerland and Bavaria. Embedded to this front on the southside of the Alps a single Cb can be seen. Also interesting is the dark appearance of the warm sector ahead of the front over Slovakia and Hungary.
30th July 2005: 07UTC
Over Switzerland first signs of convection are seen as a bright stretched patch of cloud, a Cb is recognised embedded within the front.
30th July 2005: 08UTC
The previous discussed Cb has shifted further north. Ahead of the front over Belarus and Ukraine some convective cells have developed.
30th July 2005: 09UTC
Ahead of the frontal system also daytime convection is seen over the Ukrain. Embedded to the cold front some new cells are seen over the Swiss Alps.
30th July 2005: 10UTC
The previous discussed Cbs have died out. Ahead of the front over Ukraine some convective cells have developed.
30th July 2005: 11UTC
The convection over the Ukraine is still observed in this IR image. Further south due to orographic lifting also over the Carpathian mountain convective cells have emerged. South of the Alps (on the windward side!) the first onset of convection is seen near Milano.
30th July 2005: 12UTC
The previous discussed cell over Switzerland has further developed. It is now seen over the Alps just north of Milano. Also the first signs of prefrontal convergence are seen. A small cell is recognised and should be looked at following timesteps. Embedded to the frontal system also in Latvia the development and onset of a MCS is observed.
30th July 2005: 13UTC
The convective development previously discussed over the Alps has further continued. Several large convective cells are recognised over the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Also over Poland some cells are now recognised.
30th July 2005: 14UTC
From Latvia southward over Poland into Austria and Switzerland a prefrontal convergence line is observed. The front (where still bright patches of Lee clouds are seen embedded) is now found over Southern Germany.
30th July 2005: 15UTC
Over Latvia a large convective cell is observed. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to northern Italy. Still under influence of daytime convection and a high pressure system (anticyclonic movement is well observed) in Eastern Europe also several convective systems are recognised.
30th July 2005: 16UTC
Over Latvia a large convective cell is observed. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to Northern Italy. Now also within the front some convective development is seen in Bavaria and the Czech Republic.
Still under influence of daytime convection and a high pressure system (anticyclonic movement is well observed) in Eastern Europe also several convective systems are recognised.
30th July 2005: 17UTC
Over Latvia a large convective cell is oberved, immediately south another cell in Lithuania saw explosive development. Down south a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to northern Italy. More within the front convective development has continued over Bavaria and the Czech Republic. Large MCSs are seen.
30th July 2005: 18UTC
Over Lithuania and Latvia large convective cells are oberved. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to northern Italy. At this stage also within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 19UTC
A large MCS is seen over the Baltic States and Russia. From there a long line with some smaller cells are seen over Belarus, Poland and again a larger MCS over Austria.
At this stage also within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 20UTC
At this timestep two separate convective regions are recognised. First the MCS over the Baltic States that has shifted now eastwards into Russia. Further south the remnants of the prefrontal convergence line that has merged with the cells embedded to the cold front.
30th July 2005: 21UTC
Russia, the Baltic States and Belarus are affected by a large MCS. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front forming a large cluster of convective cells covering Austria, Czech Republic and Poland. Somewhat hampered by the Alps also a MCS is seen over Northern Italy.
30th July 2005: 22UTC
Russia and Belarus are affected by a large MCS. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front forming a large cluster of convective cells covering Austria, Czech Republic and Poland. Somewhat hampered by the Alps also a MCS is seen over Northern Italy.
30th July 2005: 23UTC
Russia and Belarus are affected by large convective systems. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front forming a large cell over Poland and an MCS over Eastern Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. To the west also a convective cell is observed over Carinthia.
31st July 2005: 00UTC
Russia and Belarus are affected by large convective systems. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front forming a large cell over Poland and an MCS over Eastern Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. To the west also a convective cell is observed over Carinthia.
31st July 2005: 01UTC
The level of convectivity has weakened as the IR signal of the MCS over Russia has become less. Further to the southwest Poland is still covered by a large convective cell.
31st July 2005: 02UTC
The level of convectivity has weakened as the IR signal of the MCS over Russia has become less. Further to the southwest Poland is still covered by a large convective cell.
31st July 2005: 03UTC
Eastern Poland is still covered by a large convective cell.
31st July 2005: 04UTC
Eastern Poland is still covered by a large convective cell. The size of this cells is however also decreasing.
31st July 2005: 05UTC
In the aftermath of this case study still a large convective cell is observed over Poland. The size of this cell has however decreased over night.
31st July 2005: 06UTC
In the aftermath of this case study convective cell is observed over Poland and Belarus. The size of this cell has however decreased over night.
