The recognition of the frontal system is sowewhat more difficult in this set of enhanced IR10.8 images. Over the Baltic Sea, Denmark and the North Sea enhanced cloudiness of an occlusion cloudband are seen. The cold front of this system lies over Switzerland and Southern Germany and appears white in this image. In southern Switzerland the first signs of convection are seen as a small CB is observed. This should be observed the following timesteps.
30th July 2005: 07UTC
Embedded within the occluded cloudband also several convective cells are observed over Denmark and the North Sea. Brightness temperatures of about –50 °C are observed. Further to the east on the border between Belarus and Ukraine daytime convection is witnessed as a small green (BT of –50 °C) is recognised.
30th July 2005: 08UTC
Embedded within the occluded cloudband also several convective cells are observed over Denmark and the North Sea. Brightness temperatures of about –50 °C are observed. Further to the east on the border ebtween Belarus and Ukraine daytime convection is witnessed as a small green (BT of –50 °C) is recognised.
30th July 2005: 09UTC
Ahead of the frontal system also daytime convection is seen over the Ukraine where a larger convective cell is recognised. It appears as green indicating in this enhancement brightness temperatures of about –50 °C.
30th July 2005: 10UTC
On the Lithuanian coast the first signs of convectivity are seen as a small cell just emerged.
30th July 2005: 11UTC
The cells previous discussed in Lithuania have now further enhanced. Hard to see but still worth to mention is a small cell located on the windward(!) side of the Alps.
30th July 2005: 12UTC
The previous discussed cells have all further increased in size. The cell south of the Alps is much more recognisable now as it further developed over the past hour.
30th July 2005: 13UTC
Over Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Latvia signs of prefrontal convergence are seen. Small cells are recognised and their development should be studied also in the following timesteps.
30th July 2005: 14UTC
Three large cells are observed in connection to the frontal system. A large MCS over Latvia and smaller cells over Austria and Northern Italy. They are connected by smaller cells over Poland forming a line of prefrontal convergence.
Further east also the region surrounding the Carpathian Mountains is covered by convection.
30th July 2005: 15UTC
Over Latvia, embedded to the frontal system, a large convective cell is observed with brightness temperatures up to –60 °C. Southwards a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to Northern Italy. Within the cold front (Bavaria) also convective development is witnessed.
30th July 2005: 16UTC
Over Latvia and Estonia, embedded to the frontal system, a large convective cell is observed. Southwards over Lithuania, Poland, Austria a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to Northern Italy. Within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 17UTC
Over Lithuania embedded to the frontal system a large convective cell is observed. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to Northern Italy. At this stage also within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 18UTC
Over Latvia and Estonia embedded to the frontal system a large convective cell is observed with brightness temperatures up to –70 °C. Southward over Lithuania, Poland, Austria a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed. Within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 19UTC
Over the Baltic States, embedded to the frontal system a large convective cell is observed. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed. Within the cold front part over Bavaria and the Czech Republic several large convective cells are recognised.
30th July 2005: 20UTC
The large convective cell has moved into Russia with in the center still brightness temperatures of up to –65 °C. Southward a long line of prefrontal convergence is observed all the way up to Northern Italy. The MCS covering Eastern Austria is large. Also within the cold front part over the Czech Republic several large thunderstorms are recognised.
30th July 2005: 21UTC
Russia, the Baltic States and Belarus are affected by a large MCS that is embedded into the frontal system around the occlusion point. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front forming a large cluster of convective cells covering Austria, Czech Republic and Poland. Blocked by the Alps also a MCS is seen over Northern Italy.
30th July 2005: 22UTC
Russia, the Baltic States and Belarus are affected by two large MCSs. Further south the prefrontal convection cells are about to merge with the convective cells in the front. A large cell is observed over Eastern Austria and further south over Northern Italy. A cluster of convective cells is covering the Czech Republic and Poland.
30th July 2005: 23UTC
Russia and Belarus are affected by two large MCSs. Further south the prefrontal convection cells have merged with the convective cells in the front. A large cell is observed over Eastern Austria and further south over Northern Italy. A cluster of convective cells is covering the Czech Republic and Poland
31st July 2005: 00UTC
The MCSs seen previous over Russia and Belarus have almost dissolved. This can also be said for the convective system over Austria. At this stage one large convective cell with BTs of up to –65 °C is over Poland.
31st July 2005: 01UTC
Poland is covered by a large convective cell, its size is however also decreasing with rising BTs.
31st July 2005: 02UTC
The level of convection decreases.
31st July 2005: 03UTC
The level of convection decreases.
31st July 2005: 04UTC
The level of convection decreases.
31st July 2005: 05UTC
The level of convection decreases.
31st July 2005: 06UTC
Poland is still covered by a convective cell, its size has however decreased over the past hours with increasingly rising BTs.
