Regional Forecaster courses 2024: Baltic+, SEEMET, NOMEK

April - May 2024

Baltic+ training course for forecasters from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine will consist of an online phase 15 April - 3 May, followed by the classroom course in Tallinn 21 - 23 May 2024, hosted by the Estonian Environment Agency. The online training course will include live sessions with presentations from experts and discussions among course participants. An essential part of the course will represent case study work practising skills on using satellite to refresh forecast skills and other products for monitoring warm season convection over the Baltic+ region.


SEEMET-2024 classroom course for the forecasters from South-East European NMHSs will take place in Sarajevo, 22 - 26 April 2024, hosted by the Federal Hydrometeorological Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It will be a basic satellite course composed of lectures and practical exercises. The focus will be on applications of satellite data and products with a special emphasis on MTG-I1 data.


NOMEK, a course for Nordic operational meteorologists, will be organized by the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, 27 - 31 May 2024. The course is designed to enhance skills in monitoring, forecasting and warning of high impact summer storms using new satellite capabilities through FCI and LI on MTG-I1.

Join the 2024 Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications course

26 February – 22 March 2024/ Online

In February 2024, we will conduct the next iteration of the EUMETSAT Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications course. This month-long event, hosted entirely online, will consist of a three-week, self-paced learning phase and a synchronous one-week mini-project development phase. Throughout, we will work with you to co-develop workflows that use our marine data to support your application and research needs, as defined by you.

The course will focus on products from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 satellites, those from Copernicus contributory missions and downstream services, and those provided by our Ocean and Sea Ice Application facility (OSI SAF). Projects that centre on the use of ocean colour, sea surface temperature, sea surface topography, sea ice, and winds are all in scope. We will provide software tutorials for working with all data streams and introduce adaptable Jupyter Notebook-based code examples to support your workflows.

If you are looking to expand your understanding of our marine Earth observation, want to know more about out marine product portfolio, or are looking to exploit our data to advance your applications and/or research goals, then we encourage you to apply.

WGCEF webinars

January - March 2023/ Online

On the 28th of September, in collaboration with the Working Group on Cooperation between European Forecasters (WGCEF), the EUMETCAL Programme has launched the WGCEF European Forecaster MS Teams forum. The aim of this forum is to build an online community in which an active exchange of knowledge and experience among forecasters will take place.


A series of webinars will be dedicated to the different warning system around within our community, will take place in this Teams environment.

The first webinar will be presented by Thomas VanHamel. It will take place on Thursday 21 Dec 2023 at 13:00 CET / 12:00 UTC. It is free and open to all.

EUMETSAT’s online presence is evolving!

From January 10/ Online

On 10 January 2024, the EUMETSAT User Portal will be launched. The portal will be the one-stop-shop for satellite data users. By exploring the portal, users will be able to discover, access, and learn how to exploit data. In the near future, users will be able to register for, and personalise subscriptions to, data via the user portal, replacing the existing Earth Observation Portal.


The EUMETSAT website will then focus more specifically on serving the needs of a more general audience, and will provide partners and member states with all the information they need. The EUMETSAT website will expand its content to include outstanding and informative imagery, while developing new features to better reach out to more audiences.

Extended guide to the Cloud Phase RGB

The Cloud Phase RGB is a new product, which can be constructed from the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) on the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites. The aim of this RGB is to provide improved microphysical information on cloud tops, in particular discrimination between thick water clouds and thick ice clouds, and cloud top particle size.

DIBS: A special kind of Cirrus clouds formed by dust

Online

Have you ever heard of dust infused baroclinic systems, also known as DIBS? If not, you also might not be aware that these low pressure systems contain a lot of mineral dust that heavily influences the local weather.

Mineral dust from the Sahara Desert can produce a massive amount of clouds, more precisely cirrus clouds, which are currently not forecast by operational numerical weather models. Consequently, solar radiation and daily temperature maxima are considerably reduced and predicted convective rainfall can be delayed or missing.

Atmospheric dust also has many more impacts on weather, such as reduced visibility and colourful skies in the dust and dawn hours, as well as producing brown rain and red snow.

Synoptic and Mesoscale Analysis of Satellite Images 2023

23 October – 3 December 2023
(online phase)
4 – 8 December 2023/ Darmstadt

The SMASI course 2023 was offered by EUMeTrain, organized by DWD and supported by trainers from Geosphere Austria, KNMI, FMI, DWD and EUMETSAT. Course topics included: cyclogenesis and fronts, frontal sub-structures, mesoscale features in cold air, summer convection, atmospheric wave phenomena and shallow clouds and related weather phenomena. The online part of the course (asynchronous, self paced) was hosted on the Eumetcal Moodle and consisted of theoretical part, exercises and quizzes. It also included seven live online sessions, organised in Webex or MS Teams, covering introductory session and six playground sessions, one for each course topic. More than 50 participants successfully finished the online course.


The classroom section of the course was organized in EUMETSAT's premises in Darmstadt, gathering 17 participants, who had previously completed the online course.


The sessions focused on improving participants’ skills in using the satellite data, in combination with other meteorological data, in synoptic and mesoscale analysis.

Aviation Testbed at FMI

30 October - 2 November 2023/ Helsinki

The first Aviation Forecaster Testbed was held in Helsinki, at the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s headquarters in Dynamicum, on 30 October-2 November 2023. Twenty-five aviation forecasters throughout Europe, from 19 different countries, attended this testbed, with a special focus on icing and fog. The testbed week included working on cases selected by the trainers, real-time weather discussions, plus some presentations.


The testbed introduced some new Nowcasting SAF products suitable for aviation (icing and cloud base products, still under development), along with Fog Dynamic RGB product, which can be used to help monitoring how the fog and low clouds develop.


A highlight in the event was the moment when the FCI real-time feed was opened to the EUMETSAT member states. FMI visualisation system GeoWeb was set up to be able to display it immediately, so the participants were able to use the new pre-operational FCI data to analyse the real-time weather and compare the FCI images with the SEVIRI images. This allowed us to have a sneak preview of the coming operational capabilities offered by MTG.

5th ESA/EUMETSAT/ECMWF Joint Training on Atmospheric Composition

25 - 29 September 2023/ Innsbruck

The 5th Joint Training on Atmospheric Composition was organised by EUMETSAT together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on an annual basis. The week-long training took place in Innsbruck between 25-29 September 2023 and brought together 29 early career researchers across various EUMETSAT, ESA and ECMWF member states. This edition of the joint training marked a return to in-person participation after three years of virtual gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


The training introduced the participants to satellite and in-situ measurement techniques applicable for monitoring atmospheric composition in different regional contexts, such as high latitudes, the Mediterranean and mountain regions. A specific focus was put on validating satellite retrievals with ground-based measurements.


The lecture recordings and content is available on the joint school website. The hands-on Jupyter notebooks prepared for the practical training part are available on the EUMETSAT EUMETlab repository.


Dr. Federico Fierli from EUMETSAT was co-organiser and Dr. Julia Wagemann (MEEO s.r.l. on behalf of EUMETSAT) was responsible for the practical training part.

CALMet XV Conference - Encouraging Creative Ways of Learning and Working Together

13 - 17 November 2023/ Online

CALMet XV Conference was hosted by Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), Germany's National Meteorological Service, on 13-17 November 2023. This event brought together over 130 educators, trainers and managers from universities, research institutions, and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services from all WMO Regional Associations.


Participants shared experiences, expectations, and new ideas for applying emerging technologies and strategies in meteorology and hydrology education and training. The conference was conducted fully online in both asynchronous and live format.


During the asynchronous pre-conference period (7-12 November 2023), the participants were able to familiarize themselves with the resources and activities provided by the authors. The conference week 13-17 November was mostly synchronous. Themed sessions gave the opportunity for the authors and the audience to meet and discuss. The session modes varied between full plenaries and smaller special interest group discussions.


Sessions covered the following themes: Supporting Satellite Meteorology Training, Inspiration for Training Sessions, Fostering Collaboration with Communities, Supporting Training for Meteorological and Other Professionals, Educational Tools, Artificial Intelligence in Training and Professional Development.

Cloud optimisation and data proximate computing; training on “Big Data”

6 November 2023/ Vienna

The ESA ‘Big Data from Space’ conference brought together the Earth observation and cloud infrastructure communities, to discuss and advance new approaches to big data analysis for satellite applications.


During this event, EUMETSAT provided training on new approaches to data-proximate computing, facilitating marine and atmospheric composition workflows, using Copernicus and mandatory mission data streams, in a multi-cloud context, spanning both the WEkEO DIAS and European Weather Cloud. We developed interactive demonstrations showing how the adoption of a cloud-optimised approach, related to data formatting (cloud optimised GeoTiFF / ZARR) and object storage (S3), can support targeted and efficient data access and analysis. In addition, we showed how these analyses can be effectively scaled using parallel processing (Dask) to, either exploit local or, preferably, data-proximate computing resources. The prototype was built based on the outcomes from a previous collaboration between EUMETSAT, ECMWF and the UKMO. Although the prototype data sets, developed solely for this tutorial, are no longer available, all demonstration Jupyter Notebooks from this event can be found on the WEkEO GitHub, and are open for continued development and discussion.


Training was provided by Dr Ben Loveday (EUMETSAT/Innoflair, marine), Dr Julia Wagemann (MEEO S.r.l/EUMETSAT, atmospheric composition) and Armagan Karatosun (ECMWF, infrastructure), with extensive support from various experts.

Supporting operational satellite oceanography

12 - 15 June; 27 - 29 November 2023/ Busan, Korea & online

In June 2023, EUMETSAT, with partners NOAA and KHOA, delivered the third Operational Satellite Oceanography Symposium (OSOS3) in Busan, Korea. The event focused on multi-agency discussion of user requirements and priorities. It also featured an in-person, tripartite, training day on platforms, tools, and approaches for operational exploitation of the products in the NOAA CoastWatch, EUMETSAT marine and GOCI/GOCI-II catalogues.


In response to requests from the community, November’s follow-up Operational Satellite Oceanography Workshop solidified this training collaboration. It expanded on the OSOS3 material, in terms of content, to accommodate a broader online audience, and was also extended to three days. The interactive workshop provided tutorials on i) accessing, visualising and extracting NOAA CoastWatch data, ii) using the EUMETSAT Data Store APIs, iii) automating Copernicus Sentinel-3 OLCI processing with SNAP and Jupyter Notebooks / Python, iv) validating OLCI ocean colour products with the ThoMaS toolkit, and v) detecting Sargassum with GOCI-II.


The EUMETSAT marine training team will build upon open this content throughout 2024; supporting more advanced workflows, offering conceptual models to support data use, and expanding our offering to include cloud-optimised approaches. South East Europe community training course (SEEMET)

18 - 22 September 2023/ Ohrid, North Macedonia

The annual gathering of operational forecasters and experts in meteorology and hydrology provided a chance to learn about integrated use of satellite, NWP, radar, and other meteorological data, in the context of convection monitoring and forecasting. This advanced SEEMET course had 26 participants, from different countries of the SEEMET community, brought together to exchange knowledge and experience in topics related to convection. The group learning process was guided by trainers from local NMHSs, with the help of experts from EUMETSAT and ECMWF. The training event consisted of discussions, practical exercises, simulators, and lectures, introducing the benefits of different data to best describe the state of the land and the atmosphere, in connection with convective processes.


SEEMET courses alternate between ‘advanced’ and ‘basic’ content every second year. The next SEEMET course, a basic satellite course, will take place in Sarajevo in the spring of 2024.

Highlights from the EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference 2023

The Atmospheric Composition EUMETSAT team participated in the EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference (EMSC) in Malmö, Sweden between 11-15 Sep 2023.


Event highlights

Julia Wagemann presented 'The EUMETSAT TrainHub - Discover and explore EUMETSAT data and products in an interactive and hands-on way'. The presentation introduced Jupyter notebook resources from EUMETSAT, and highlighted the EUMETSAT TrainHub.


Hayley Evers-King, Federico Fierli, and Julia Wagemann co-hosted a lunchtime workshop on EUMETSAT and Copernicus data access services. The workshop introduced the EUMETSAT Data Store, the EUMETSAT Data Tailor, the European Weather Cloud and the Copernicus DIAS service WEkEO. In addition, two practical data demonstrations showcased the EUMETSAT Data Store, the EUMDAC API and WEkEO.


On Friday, Anu-Maija Sundstroem (FMI) presented the outcomes of the scientific study 'Analysis of dust aerosols in PMAp Climate Data'. The analysis was done in collaboration with EUMETSAT experts Marie Doutriaux Boucher and Soheila Jafariserajehlou.

International Autumn School on Satellite Data Applications

23 - 27 October 2023/ Athens, Greece

The first in the series of the Autumn School on Satellite Data Applications workshops was jointly organised by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) and EUMETSAT, with the support of HSAF. The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance participants' understanding and utilisation of EUMETSAT satellite data and products, including SAF products, in various fields of study or applications, with a specific focus on the MSG and MTG satellites.


Thirty young scientists, postgraduate students, experts, and researchers from EUMETSAT Member states participated in the workshop, facilitated by trainers from EUMETSAT, HNMS, and HSAF.


The participants were guided through informative lectures and had the opportunity to learn about the basics of remote sensing and satellite data interpretation. They also engaged in hands-on practice sessions, plus learned data visualisation and processing techniques using Python on Jupyter notebooks.
