MSG IR10.8 imagery with KO-index and vertical motion at 500 hPa: time sequence
9th June 2004: 00UTC
The image shows the KO-index (blue lines), Omega 500 hPa (red) and the IR-image (cloud tops below -65°C marked). The high extending cloud complex is under strong vertical motion and at the northeastern edge of potential instability (GME-analysis: KO = 5). The comparision to the corresponding radiosoundings from Emden, Schleswig and Bergen (near Hannover) reveals that the model weakened the frontal zone by increasing the KO-index over Emden (TEMP: 0, GME: 1) and decreasing it over Schleswig (TEMP: 8, GME: about 6).

The patterns of strong vertical motion near the highest cloud tops that was embedded in the transition zone of stable and instable air moved to North Germany. At the right side (looking into the direction of the streaming) of the super cell a blue coloured pixel developed at the more unstable site of that transition zone.

Upward motion and potential instability can be observed over the eastern parts of Middle Europe. However, in the meanwhile the cloud tops reveal lower heights. During the afternoon the convection reactivated again.
