Convective Storms RGB

18 September 2007, 07:00 UTC

Convective Storms RGB composite, discussed thoroughly in the MSG Interpretation guide, uses information from 6 channels (IR10.8, IR3.9, WV6.2, WV7.3, VIS0.6 and NIR1.6) to discriminate especially between deep precipitating clouds (of different strong updrafts) and cirrus clouds.

Different colors define different types of clouds:

  • red: Deep precipitating clouds; large ice particles on top
  • yellow: Severe weather CBs with strong updrafts; small ice particles OR thick high level lee cloudiness.
  • dark red: Thin cirrus; large ice particles
  • purple: Thin cirrus cloud; small ice particles
  • blue: Thin to no clouds
