Vertical Cross Sections
Vertical cross sections are important tools as they allow a view into the vertical extension of synoptic and mesoscale systems. In this chapter several aspects of interest of the prefrontal convergence are discussed:- The isentropes that give an idea of the (un)stable stratification of the troposphere
- The potential vorticity to picture the cyclogenesis going on and the convective cells that develop along WV boundaries
- The upward motions associated to the convection
- The regions of divergence and convergence and at what levels of the troposphere these are found

Summary of the investigations in this chapter
The time series of the VCS show that already at an early stage the prefrontal region is characterized as very unstable as was seen in the isentropes. The convergence/divergence near the surface/upper layers were distinctive. A cross section through the V-shaped structure that was discussed in the chapter with satellite images revealed some severe updrafts in the fields of omega.
